Student drowns after sneaking from school games to swim in Indian Ocean

A Form Four student from Muhuri Muchiri Secondary School yesterday died after sneaking from school games venue to go swim in the Indian Ocean.

Mr Daniel Mokua was swept away by strong sea waves and efforts by volunteer diver to save him were futile. The waves were so strong he was retrieved an hour later.

He was part of the rugby team and was swimming together with 10 other students and their coach when the tragedy struck.  The sneaked out when the teachers were having a meeting. The coach is being held Bamburi Police Station to help with the investigations

The students are participating in the Brookside Kenya Secondary School Sports Association games in Mombasa and had strict orders not to leave games venue.

“We want to find out their exact motive of sneaking from the games venue despite the rules against it being very clear. They were supposed to be confined within the venue,” Kisauni sub-county police commander Julius Kiragu told journalists.

Kiragu said the coach may have helped the boys to sneak out of the venue. He appealed to teachers and team managers accompanying students in the sporting activities to be extra-vigilant and monitor movements of students.

“The majority of these students come from upcountry where there are no large water bodies. They are always overexcited about the ocean,” said the police boss.
